THE BURGAGE HOUSE
A Northumbrian Holiday Home in the heart of Warkworth

ABOUT
The Burgage House is a Victorian built terraced house nestled in the heart of Warkworth, Northumberland. It sits on a plot of land that has been in constant use since Norman times: a 'burgage'. Every burgage plot in Warkworth is 23 feet wide and ran from the street to the river, providing personal land for the inhabitants to grow crops, raise livestock and develop small cottage industries such as beekeeping, wood turning and stone masonry.
These days our burgage plot is used to provide an idyllic home from home, with 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 sitting rooms, kitchen, utility and dining room as well as a beautiful garden with views down to the river and up to the castle.

THINGS TO DO
Just a few of the countless things to do in Northumberland...
Warkworth Castle

Located just at the top of the street this 14th century castle was the stronghold of the Dukes of Northumberland and has a long and fascinating history.

The Farne Islands
Take a boat trip from Seahouses to visit this unique animal sanctuary where puffins, guillemots, seals and arctic turns abound.
Barter Books
Get deliciously lost in the UK's second largest second-hand book shop. Located in Alnwick's old station, model trains still travel over the book shelves while murals of famous writers look down over the old platforms.
Warkworth Hermitage
A short walk along the river brings you to this mysterious and unique religious hideaway carved into the sheer rock face by an unknown medieval hermit

Alnwick Castle & Gardens

Another property of the Dukes of Northumberland, in recent times this castle has become more famous as the location of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. Great for kids (and big kids) who can ride broomsticks, climb on cannons and take in the latest attractions at the Gardens.
The Cheviot Hills
Drive West or North to explore the Cheviot Hills. During breathtaking walks you can discover Iron Age forts, wild heather moorlands and ancient cup & ring marks.

Warkworth Beach
Just a mile from the house lies Warkworth Beach, a long stretch of white sand with tall dunes and views all the way from Amble to Alnmouth. Dog friendly.
Chillingham Castle
This privately owned castle has a gruesome past and rumours of hauntings abound. Eccentrically presented and full of amazing artefacts it's always worth a visit. Take a trip out to see the rare Chillingham Cattle if you can.
Lindisfarne
The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is known as 'the cradle of Christianity' after St Aidan founded a monastery here in 635AD. The island can be accessed by car at low tide; drive over to see the monastic ruins, 16th century castle, sleepy village and to buy some mead. Check ahead for safe crossing times.
